Operational Security Work Stream – Security Remediation Programme

Following an acquisition, a well-known global insurance and reinsurance company concluded that it was necessary to assess the security posture of its new subsidiary. This assessment would then determine what steps would be required to improve the security of the subsidiary’s estate.

The challenge:

To strengthen the security posture of the subsidiary, a multi-year Security Remediation Programme was initiated. This significant programme of work comprised many individual projects, split into specific work streams. The Operational Security work stream focused on those projects which were highly process-based, or of a governance and/or assurance nature, and required specialist security knowledge and experience to implement.

The solution:

The head of the Security Remediation Programme was responsible for overseeing the execution of all projects within that workstream. BSS provided SME support to lead on the Operational Security aspects of the Security Remediation Programme, with individual Project Managers being assigned to manage and implement each associated project over the 12 month course of this particular work stream.

In the role of Operational Security work stream Lead, the BSS SME was tasked with providing support to all project managers within that work stream, and to be a central point of escalation for any risks and issues. The BSS SME was also required to liaise with the Programme Management Office (PMO), to ensure any problems or requirements were communicated in a clear and timely manner, and to be accountable for all budget and resource calculations throughout the lifecycle of the programme.

The outcome:

The scope, and consequently the number of colleagues engaged within the Security Remediation Programme has grown considerably over the past year. The expansion has been the result of introducing a greater number of processes to be assessed, streamlined and adapted. The Security Remediation Programme is ongoing and will continue for some considerable time due to the continuing expansion of the programme scope.
