Patch Management Audit

This global asset manager had a Patch Management Audit in its Internal Audit Plan for 2022 but lacked the specialist knowledge internally to undertake the audit. BSS had an MSA in place to allow the client to bring in specialist knowledge and complete the audit on a fixed price basis.

The challenge:

The audit needed to cover the global technology estate, the majority of which is Microsoft based. A significant number of the key IT contacts were based in the UK across multiple locations. The audit needed to review patch management practices and processes, as well as check adherence to such processes.

The objective was to provide assurance that there was adequate control over gap analysis processes in particular, and ideally also provide some value add advice where issues were identified.
The solution:

Drawing upon its bench of experienced internal auditors, BSS was able to provide an SME whose experience spanned both security and internal audit. The SME had undertaken two recent patch management audits, and written patch management standards for two FS businesses.

BSS arranged the audit into two clear milestones. The first was to deliver an audit delivery plan and finalised list of contacts and materials to which the BSS auditor would need access to. Second was the fieldwork and reporting.

The audit report was drafted a week before the engagement end and feedback agreed before the final audit report was completed (prepared in the client’s normal format).

The outcome:

The audit was delivered successfully to the client’s satisfaction. Along with the audit report the client also benefitted from the expertise BSS provided and has requested that BSS undertakes similar audits in the future.
