The next in our series of meet the team is solutions and services manager Emily McMeeking, last month it was Chris Wilkinson.

Emily joined BSS in November 2022 following a varied career in the cyber security industry over the last six years.

Drawing upon her academic background in psychology and neuroscience at University College London (UCL), Emily’s journey into the realm of cyber security was ignited by her genuine curiosity about criminality and hacking.

Emily’s first role post-university was as part of a graduate scheme at a major reseller where she worked across a range of tech areas including platform, hardware, networking, and, for the first time, cyber security solutions.

Inspired by this initial introduction, Emily embarked on a career path focused solely on cyber security. She has gained valuable experience working across both private and public sectors, offering her a comprehensive understanding of the distinct security challenges encountered by organisations of various sizes and types.

With a keen awareness of the nuanced variations within security landscapes across industries, Emily has gained valuable understanding, particularly within highly regulated sectors such as financial services or the NHS. In these domains, safeguarding data necessitates an indispensable cybersecurity strategy, although the availability of resources for such purposes is comparatively more constrained in the public sector compared to the private sector.

Within her consultancy-driven position at BSS, Emily delves deep into the intricacies of her clients’ challenges, facilitating the development of solutions and ensuring their successful implementation. Through this expertise, she aids organisations in recognising and rectifying vulnerabilities that exist between the prevailing level of threats and their current cyber security posture.

In an industry predominantly dominated by men, Emily is driven by a desire to inspire more women to explore the realm of technology, particularly in the captivating field of cyber security.

Despite the prevailing statistical gender imbalance, Emily warmly encourages women not to be discouraged by these numbers. In fact, she highlights the promising upward trajectory of women in both technical and strategic positions year after year and emphasises the presence of invaluable support networks ready to empower and uplift aspiring female professionals.

In her free time, Emily finds joy in being in the great outdoors accompanied by her faithful four-legged companion, Potato. Together, they explore scenic landscapes, from peaceful parks to winding trails. These moments spent outside offer a welcomed respite from the screen and the cyber security world.
